Barbie 65 years - Exhibitions in the Netherlands

Valkenburg aan de Geul

ValkenburgMuseum.jpg

The Barbie collection, from February 7 to March 3, 2024 in the Jacques-Vonkzaal of Museum Valkenburg, belongs to the private collection of Saskia Poortvliet. The exhibition focuses on the early years of the Barbie doll through to contemporary models. Her collection shows the evolution of this popular doll and her fashion. Barbie was an instant success among girls more than sixty years ago. But many parents viewed her critically. They saw the doll as a pin-up girl with big breasts, living in the American glamor world. Nevertheless, the Barbie doll became a classic. The first real Barbie doll was introduced on March 9, 1959 at an international toy fair in New York. With her ponytail, hourglass figure, black and white striped swimsuit and high heels, she reflected the classic American fashion look from the 1950s. Barbie is like a mirror of time. The dolls are not dressed the same as the girls who play with them. The appearance of adult women has been translated into dolls. Mattel also knows how to adapt Barbie to the market, such as the black Barbie that made its debut in 1967. There were already prosperous black Americans at that time and they wanted black Barbies for their children. A doll they could identify with. The Barbie film, which was released last year, recalls a brash childhood, in which you could give free rein to your imagination and disappear into a dream world of your own creation. Anyone who loved Barbie as a child will never lose that love...

Mini Barbie Museum. Exhibition during the spring fair.

Just like 5 years ago, when Barbie celebrated its 60th anniversary, there will again be a small exhibition during the Barbie fair to celebrate Barbie's 65th anniversary.

Marjo Tresoor, Armel Rood and Marianne de Heus exhibit dolls from their private collection.

For that reason alone, a visit to the fair is worthwhile. Come and see the very first Barbie and her beautiful clothes and accessories through to her contemporary looks and outfits.
